This week, we lost an industry legend, colleague, fellow MPC Board Member, mentor, friend and most importantly a true gentleman.  Bill Thompson gave so much more to this industry than his impressive resume reflects in his 50 years in the film business.  He was an educator, a confidant, a leader and was instrumental in his philanthropic efforts.   Bill played an integral role in developing the popular star-studded, Motion Picture Club Installation lunches in their inception.  Bill remained on the Board of The Motion Picture Club as a dedicated and active Trustee until the end. He Served as President of The Motion Picture Club from 1990-1991. His legacy and presence will never be forgotten, and he will always remain an honorable Trustee on The Motion Picture Club Board.

 

Bill loved The Motion Picture Club and it was his wish that our Club continue and be relevant for years to come.  The current Board made a commitment to Bill that we will continue work and strengthen the Club so that it continues to thrive in our ever-changing industry.

 

Last week at our MPC annual luncheon, it was our great honor to award Bill as this year’s MPC Lifetime Achievement Award.  We are so grateful that he was recognized for this prestigious honor, and we are ever so proud that the Lifetime Achievement Award will be renamed “The William R. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award” in Bill’s honor moving forward.

 

Bill and his family have generously requested in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to The Motion Picture Club in honor of Bill. Again, this is just an amazing gesture that Bill’s presence continues to be felt.

 

The overpouring support and condolences we have received on behalf of Bill Thompson has been overwhelming and very much appreciated. We thank you to all that have donated to The Motion Picture Club in Bill Thompson’s honor. There will be a memorial service for Bill on Sunday, January 8 at 11:00 am at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 W. 83rd Street, New York, NY. The service will be in the Schnurmacher Chapel followed by light refreshments in the Eisner Auditorium, both on the 6th floor.  There will be an on-line streaming option as well. Details will be provided as soon as possible.
